Today was a humbling but very rewarding experience. My morning pt was a guy I had screened over Spring Break. I knew he wouldn't qualify but I still needed some perio. He was only 19 but he had so much calculus built up behind the mand ant. I tried to just do it with hand scaling. When I called for a scale check I knew that I hadn't gotten it all off but I just didn't know what else to do! In retrospect, I should have sharpened or asked for help BEFORE declaring scale check. Needless to say it was an embarrassing scale check as I kept writing down spots. Prof. Hanson really helped me dissect my stroke. I need to remember these things everytime rather than getting complacent with how I do things and make sure I'm using the right end of the explorer so that I can really feel the tooth! Anyway, he was a Class II and so I believe I am done with that requirement :) Oh and he's coming in for a pano too!!!
My afternoon had 3 screenings scheduled. I was disappointed when I first saw my pt because he was only 17. But upon further examination, he had big clicks of calculus on nearly every tooth!!! Way to go for successful screenings! I'll get to use him for Mockboards. Sadly, they have to be 18 to be used for real Boards and his birthday isn't until the end of the summer. But at least I have a true, Board-quality pt this time! And I'm pretty sure he will show up. My second screening never showed so I was able to take the necessary x-rays as well. The other pt didn't have much of anything so I spent 45 minutes going through her HHx. That was a good review I guess.
Things to remember for instrumentation:
1. Always point the toe/tip down so that I'm getting underneath calculus
2. When activating, pull up and toward the tooth rather than away from it
3. Get up on my fulcrum finger
4. Use only indirect vision for the mand ant linguals (I have really bad posture :s)
