Where did the time go?

Oh my goodness! I feel like a space cadet this semester...I think the love bug might have something to do with it. Anyway, commenting on my last few clinics sessions. My last time at the VA was awesome! Not just because we had better than sex cake and Costa Vida for lunch. But in the afternoon I saw a patient that had postponed his cleaning for a while so that he could get it done right before his implant procedure. I could not believe the amount he had built up in so short a time! I used the ultrasonic for most of it but he had a lot of recession and sensitivity on his mand. ant. so I just did handscaling. He was missing #2 (that's where the implant was going) and I had the hardest time trying to adapt my ultrasonic onto the mesial portion of #1. After I couldn't get it all with the ultra, I turned to my hand instruments and even that took me a while to figure out a position that I could fulcrum off of and scale off these huge, clearly visible chunks of supragingival calculus! I haven't had that feeling of "what can I do to get this darn spot" in a while so it was a nice reminder for my last VA day. I did miss a few spots on his mand ant and so I think I'm relying on my ultrasonic to do too much for me. I need to get better at using my explorer to detect calculus. I usually don't do it before either. I use my probe to kind of feel it and then my instruments with an exploratory stroke...is that what most people do I wonder?
