You know you're a nerd when...

I know this is a little out of sequence but bare with me. I went to the VA last Thursday and it was awesome! My morning pt. was a very nice, middle-aged man. He opened his mouth and I was excited as a kid on Christmas morning!!! There was calculus as far as the eye could see :D He also mentioned that he was very tender the last time he came in and so I suggested injections. He had mainly 4-5 mm pockets but a couple of 6's. The coolest part (for me anyway) was that he had those rings of calculus not only on the mand. ling. but also on the facials!!! I've never seen that much calculus!!! The injections went smooth and he said he couldn't even feel where I was in his mouth! It was so fun to see the calculus come off with the ultrasonic. Crazy I know but that's how I know I'll love this job! haha I also passed off 2 PE's. What a great week for PE's!!! ;) I would have liked to schedule him back with me but he'll be seeing a SLCC student.
My afternoon pt. has MS and it's to the point now where he has tremors and slurred speech. I hadn't really noticed the tremors until halfway through the x-rays I told him to hold still while I exposed it and when I came back he told me how hard that was for him. We had to work out some new techniques for brushing since his hands just shake the whole time. I tried to let him rest every now and again while I was working in his mouth but I felt like a true hygienist as I tried to develop some tx alt. for my pt. ;) He was funny but a big flirt so I had to watch what I said!
What I learned in clinic today:
1. Intersect the IA triangle right in half. If I'm too high then the solution won't spread to the nerve.
2. Describe the appt. in greater detail when needed (ie what they are smoking and what I suggested).
3. Be more proactive in recommending smoking cessation and know where I can refer my pts.
4. When I know a pt. has a medical condition, look for clues and ask them what they struggle with so I can give them personalized care.

You crazy girl. I knew you were a nerd from the moment I met you!!! lol Know that was some very good advice... long... but good! lol I have never seen rings of calc like that, that would surely be something to behold!!! Wish I could have been there to see it, but I would have wanted to join in the fun of removing it, cause that is the best part!!!
